"good" is in the eye of the beholder.    I haven't read these myself, but those who have read them usually say they are his next best thing after the Garret, P.I. books.    Garret Files 4tw :)

I have read an Omnibus of a large portion of the Dread Empire series  (Cruel Winds)... I can say it was obvious that he wrote it before The Black Company... much of what was laid out in Cruel Winds you can see redefined and detailed in The Black Company ... but.. all in all .. it was not a BAD read.
